Relocation Tips
Check with all of the moving van rental companies available in your region for
the best deal. They differ tremendously. It helps if you can take a couple of
weeks to compare rates. Compare with the regular rate or a discount rate based
on your autoclub; sometimes the discount is not the cheapest rate. We saved
hundreds of $$s by picking up a truck 60 miles away. It was time-consuming but
worth it to us.
* Spend the extra $$ to rent a hand truck and furniture pads. They will make a
big difference in the quality of your move and are usually inexpensive. Also,
check if the moving company offers package deals on boxes and moving materials
if they are required.
* Keep the weight slips for your truck together and in a safe place!
* Use towels, sheets, and clothing as extra packing material particularly for a
local move.
* Be sure to keep all receipts for expenses. Any profit made is taxable. The
amount spent on the move is non-taxable!
* Check to see if you need a special insurance policy as most homeowners
policies don't cover your items while they are in the moving-van.
* Always try to save the original packing materials from electronic items. They
travel best when re-packed in their original container.
* While packing use markers of different colors for each room and label briefly
what items are in each box. It will make it easier to distinguish which room
boxes should go in.
* If you think you will be moving again soon and have additional storage space,
break down as many boxes as possible to keep for your next move. They will
already be color coded from your previous move.
When the Movers Pack You
* Try to group any collections or items you want packed together in advance.
When the movers pack they don't sort things!
* Check the damage listed on the inventory paperwork very closely before
signing. Make sure to dispute any damage you don't believe was present.
Ask the movers to take boxes and moving materials that you don't want. They are
responsible for doing that.
*Though moving day can be very stressful try your best to be pleasant to the
movers. They always seem to take a bit of extra care with the packing and moving
of items if they are pleased with the way they are treated. Have some snacks and
drinks available for them. If possible, offer them lunch (a deli tray to make
sandwiches or ordering out for pizza are easy inexpensive ways to feed them).
*Keep the children out of the mover's way. If you don't have a friend or day
care provider to take them try to pack up one out-of-the-way room first and set
the children to a project in that room. It's the perfect time for them to make
memory books to give to the friends they are leaving behind.
* Watch and make sure items are being wrapped and packed properly. Sometimes the
movers tend to rush and forget how much your items mean to you.
* Take a video (or photos) of items, especially anything of value. Don't pack
items you don't want to take the chance of losing like birth certificates,
irreplaceable family photos or videos, immunization and school records,
etc. Keep those items with you if possible.
* Make sure the items are packed to your satisfaction before leaving your
house. Don't take the movers word that they will be packed better before
shipping. That rarely happens.
* Make sure the movers unpack everything when you reach your destination. It is
easier to file a claim if damage or theft is noted before the movers leave your
home. They can also then take away any moving materials you don't want to keep.
* If you have items (such as holiday ornaments, etc) already in boxes make sure
they repack them. It is the best way to make sure that breakage will be covered
should it occur.
* If you aren't careful items you don't want packed will find their way into
boxes. Keep your keys, wallet, checkbook and cleaning materials in closed off
room that the movers won't be in. They have been known to pack anything they
find!
Involving the Children
* Let children review housing and school choices for the new location. Listen to
their impute so they feel they have had some control over the move.
* Call ahead to the local Recreation Center to sign your child up for an
activity. Though it may be a hectic time for you to play chauffer it is
important for you child to get involved quickly in their new community.
* Help your child make memory books for the friends they are leaving behind. It
will keep them occupied and remind them that their friends won't forget them
just because they have moved.
* Let each child pack a bag of treasures including a special toy or two, some
snacks, etc to take on the trip.
Moving In and Moving Out
Upon moving into a new residence make sure any damage is listed on your lease so
you won't be responsible for repairing it when you move out.
* If you choose to clean the house yourself here are some tips:
+ to clean the dishwasher run the empty dishwasher through a normal cycle with
orange tang instead of soap.
+ a dab of shampoo in the water will leave windows streak free.
+ white, non-gel toothpaste will remove black heel marks from linoleum floors.
